Aegis: A Continuing Evolution

Shouldn't the U.S. have a patent on the Aegis DDG overall design. I mean Japan and South Korea's Aegis destroyers look Identical to the U.S. destroyer. I will admit I can tell the difference in the Japanese one being it sits up higher than the other 2 and it's mast is different. But if one of the two attacked an enemy unprovoked it will put us in a bad position. We should have required them to differentiate their hull design. What do you think?
