They lied to each other. She saw a good-looking young stud she could parade in front of people to boost her confidence and said and did what it took to make it happen. How she could have thought he could have been in love with her is beyond me.
He saw an older "plain Jane" that he could manipulate into supporting him and eventually help him gain access to US citizenship. When he discovered that she couldn't afford him he was through.
Now they are both unhappy because their plans didn't pan out. I call it KARMA. It will jump up and bite you in the butt every time. Honesty is always the best policy.
