Bison roamed Britain 12,000 years ago but were nearly extinct by the 19th century.

A rewilding project in Britain that aims to reintroduce bison to the country has received a major boost with the arrival of a male European bison from Germany. The bull has joined an all-female herd at the Wilder Blean project in Kent, which is a joint effort between the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust. The male bison is considered vital to the success of the project as it will help to increase the size of the herd.

The three females were released into the woods spring 2022 and quickly and unexpectedly became four after it emerged one was pregnant. The four bison are doing well and have all settled in.

As the bull was introduced they sniffed, nuzzled, and ate together before disappearing into the woods as a newly formed herd. They will roam the woods and fulfill their role as "ecosystem engineers," where they will help to reshape the landscape by debarking trees, dust bathing, and creating corridors through the dense woods. These actions bring light to the forest floor and create space for other wildlife to thrive. This, in turn, helps to prepare for climate change by creating a more diverse and resilient ecosystem.

Would the male bison be aggressive towards humans in the wild?
