Pretty sure Iroh wasn't firebending because if i recall correctly he broke out during the eclipse. Using the lack of the guards firebending against them. I may be wrong though.

I imagine Iroh blasted the bars open seconds before the Eclipse, then just brute forced his way out.

Honestly, it's a really clever way to make us empathize with Zuko somewhat. Zuko is distraught b/c he missed his chance to help his uncle, and by depriving us of the chance to see the epic fight, we feel the same thing.

This is a fine example of "show, don't tell". They hyped it up and only showed us the aftermath because they didn't need to. Iroh's shining moment was saved for the liberation of Ba Sing Se.
We know Iroh is more than capable, they didn't need to animate it.
Iroh didn't use firebending, nobody could when he broke out. That's why he waited for the "day of black sun"

It will never live up to our imaginations.

Not gonna lie, I like the scene as is. We already know a lot about Iroh and his past:

One of the few people to carry the moniker "Dragon"

Capable of actually breathing fire like one, something nobody else does

Took on a small troop of earthbenders while in chains and unable to properly firebend

Creates new techniques just by studying other styles of bending

One of the Fire Nation's most brutal generals

And the fact that he was never beaten. He only ever stopped the seige on Ba Sing Se because his son died.

We know enough of his past to get a clear picture of who he used to be, both as a strategist and a fighter. Then we see his training. How he spends every second he's not being observed working his body to its limit.

The only thing we don't know is how he's going to escape.

The result is like having an old myth come alive. We don't need to see him actually fight, we know it's possible because of what we know about Iroh. The surprise comes from how direct his approach was.

I presonally love that we dont get to see Iroh escaping. It leaves the whole battle to the viewer s imagination and adds a note of mistery

The guard's recollections makes that scene pretty good, though. Ngl

He didn't firebend, he broke out during the eclipse so no bendy bendy. Pure muscle

The fact that Iroh literally got buff, broke the iron bars and escaped DURING the eclipse . I would’ve loved to see a buff iroh beating up fire nation guards

The horizontal bars are bent but the vertical bars have clean unbent breaks, so either just before the eclipse he used a concentrated form of fire bending hot enough to melt the bars like a welding torch or he became strong enough to just shatter iron

Sometimes less is more and leave our fantasy up to think how he escaped

Remember it's a kids show and It would create mixed feelings for iroh's character between parents and kids

That's because Iroh was not being kid-friendly :)

im gonna be honest the idea that the only bit of irohs escape is zuko trying to find him holds alot more weight than if we already knew that iroh was out before hand

No I don't want to see that. It give us opportunity to imagine 😊
