I left my lathe cutting in the basement when I noticed this video upload from MrPete. I heard it making a racket but I didn't dare walk away from the computer because I didn't want to miss any important information from MrPete's amazing youtube channel. I'm sure the lathe will be fine.

Nice presentation. I love your quote “Don’t leave your lathe running while you go to the bathroom” Now that would make a great warning sticker for my lathe!

Very good video on "how not to crash a lathe" always needed to remind everyone to be safe and attentive to their work.

Thank you Mr Pete, for this crash course on protecting your lathe

A good review of this subject. Those who are unfamiliar with machinery should also know that as you move to a gear head machine things get more serious. As I tell my grandson - the South Bend Heavy 10 with leather flat belt drive can hurt you. The Cincinnati 13 can kill you. One cannot fear the machine but does have to understand how things work. Very unforgiving if one is inattentive. I'd hate to be teaching a general shop class today - we were bad as young people back in the 50s and 60s as far as being attentive but now with all the distractions it has to be worse. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video Mr Pete. I did not see it but I know I had a student crash the lathe, I went to use it and the power feed did not work it has sheared the pin coming out of the quick change gear box.

I'm rebuilding a 15" Sheldon lathe that had been crashed sometime in its life before I bought it. The fiber gears were replaced with steel gears, and they did a hack job on the apron in an attempt to repair the damage. $600 worth of new clutch parts, new 3-D printed gears, and many other parts that had to be made since I cannot afford B & K prices, it's running again. As always, thanks for sharing Mr. Pete, Ken.

Some years ago, I was 'The Welder' in a fabrication machine shop...we had 8-10 lathes, some were quite large. A guy in the 'toolroom' was running a very high precision lathe, maybe about 14X 35 or so. He somehow crashed the carriage into the chuck at high speed, broke the carriage completely in two.
The shop owner came and asked me to look at it, see if I could just 'braze it back together'...no way, I saw the back 1/2 of the carriage laying in the chip they made a few pieces of flatbar and drilled/tapped some holes to hold it together...I don't think it ever really got used anymore...
They were really upset I couldn't just braze or weld it back together....I said "maybe, but it will never be worth anything in this shop"..
The company made Aero-space parts..everything was .0005"...

Talk about dangerous machinery.
Many years ago I taught machine tool operation with manual machines at a local college.
We had a big beautiful shop with manual equipment and one cylindrical grinder.
The syllabus required familiarization with, and operation of, all tool room machinery, including surface and cylindrical grinders.
Had to emphasize to the students that a surface grinder was not a milling machine and that a .0005" deep cut was considered heavy on said grinders. Ditto for the cylindrical grinder not being a lathe.
Turned out this cylindrical grinder was semi-automatic, made in the Czech Republic, and all controls were labelled in who knows what language. And, of course, there was no operating manual!
I did a little tinkering with this beast; consequently I refused to use it with my class. "Get me a manual in English or nothing doing" I told the department chief.
One week later during my next class I noticed that the 24" dia. grinding wheel was cracked! The wheel had smashed into the work piece when someone started the thing and pushed the wrong button to "see what would happen".
Fortunately the wheel did not blow up.

Excellent video, i would recommend anybody new to a lathe don't use power feed untill you get used to your lathe. 🇬🇧👍

The first time I over-ran the carriage it broke a pin inside the apron. Cheap fix but a lot of work. So I replaced the steel taper pin coupling the feed/lead screw to the QCGB with a brass pin, like your Clausing. I made a couple of spares, too. The second time was thirty years later. I actually remembered where I kept the spares, and was up and running in minutes.🙂

My SB13 came out of one of the local school systems. While relatively low-time, the compound bears the battle scars of numerous encounters with the chuck jaws. Of course I've NEVER let that happen.... 🤐

Managed to crash my Atlas 10 early on in the learning curve and busted up the feed gearbox pretty bad. Was able to get a new housing and bevel gear from Clausing, but they do come at a premium; lesson learned! Have come to realize that I've learned a lot since the day I thought I knew everything... Thank You Mr Pete for all of your excellent videos!
