The Gospel of Sincere Obedience | Theocast

Oh no, Jon and Justin are talking about obedience again. Yes, we are—and it’s an important subject because, to be frank, we truly want everyone who listens to this podcast to obey sincerely. The question is, how is that accomplished? There is no good news for those who only emphasize obedience. We have to look to a power beyond ourselves, and that’s what we’re going to be discussing today.

Oh, that we all might glory in the obedience of a faithful Christ more than our own.

Became born again in 1995, got carried away by different kinds of teachings like you can lose your salvation, lived in anxiety and depression in and out of backsliding until I finally grasped the simplicity of the gospel and believed Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Out of 100% how much did Jesus Christ pay on the cross for sinners?, 100%, therefore you cannot even add 1% to the finished work of the cross, obviously good works follow believing out of love for God.All praise and Glory to God alone, thank you Jesus.

Thank you both for this. I stopped this video to go talk to my kids & say while I know I talk to them about things they ought to do, the gospel is actually good news. I explained the peace & rest, & how when God sees them He doesn't see their sin, but the same righteousness that Christ Himself had as His righteousness is given to us when we repent. I needed that reminder to give the WHOLE counsel of God, which is limited at what you should do.

Thank you for this video! I'm the one who has been asking, "What about obedience?" This answers my question. I think we need to hear more of this. What you talk about in your videos is so important - avoiding pietism and legalism. But it's good to explain every now and then that there are things we "need to do" as Christians, but it's never based in the first use of the law but on grace. Thank you for these videos!

Very encouraging and lots of yes to feeling beat down by the always-doing part. God did all the heavy work. I like that y’all emphasized rest in obedience and holiness. Love that idea to not use the Bible as a billy club 🔥; it should lead us to life, repentance, encouragement, and renewal.

A shout out for Justin about his series on Romans. This relates because in his first sermon, he fully debunks the idea that the OT is all law. He does what Jesus did, by teaching the gospel from the OT and Prophets.

It is no longer I who live but Christ that lives in me . Gal 2:20.

When we get to the point that, with our mind we serve the law of God, but with the flesh we serve the law of sin, the fact is settled, he (God) elected us from before the foundation of the world. If a person wants to be obedient and not fail God, however, knows that they are not capable of it, that is a great evidence of belonging to the fold! Press on believers!!

Can you post a list of references of the verses from 1 John? PLEASE!

Lord Jesus, during His earthly ministry, was big on emphatic warnings; therefore, I think "if ye love me, ye will keep my commands" is a two-sided coin which both warns and promises. I also think First John is a two-sided coin, in that it offers assurance to those who believe, but serves as a warning to those who don't, and it also serves as an encouraging invitation to both believers and those who may not yet be fully persuaded.

Whoever has been born of God does not sin…. When sin showed up I thought I wasn’t born again so I got born again every time sin showed up and again and again and again. Just needs 1 time. First John 3:9.

If we don't obey him are we forgiven?

The root of the idea that we are "responsible" for our sanctification stems from poor teaching with respect to passages like "work out your salvation..." and not tying them to the work of the Holy Spirit and a poor understanding of our union with Christ and a law gospel distinction.

Also the misconception that the OT is law and the NT is gospel. Passages from the Prophets (reading Ezekiel with Chad Bird right now) that emphasize the do this and live, without acknowledging the passages that are gospel and point to Christ and the great and precious promises we have in Him.

If a preacher's main focus is on hell, and not on the glorification of thew crucifixion, then that man should not be reputed as any especially good teacher. I am referring to Steve Lawson. I think we should reserve high repute for those who have the proper focus of Christ's glorification according to the righteous mercy which He performed upon the cross of God's love.

But now it is no longer I who do it but sin that lives in me. Rom 7:17. Do you not know that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives Rom 7:1. We died to the law by the body of Christ. You can’t sin if you are dead, crucified with Christ.

STRIVE MIGHTILY to enter the Narrow Gate! But that's not what "christians" are doing anymore. They are caterpillars inside their cocoons struggling to get out, and they don't like this struggling; it requires too much effort. So a bunch a Johnny come lately teachers seeking to become popular decided to help them by cutting through their cocoons to release them. This means the butterfly is not even fully formed or as strong as it should be and is unfit to take on the challenges of its new world. And the tool they used to cut the butterfly from the cocoon is called scriptural psychobabble, the stuff of mere religion as dead as any other. You have not striven to the point of sweating your own blood in your battle against sin like the Lord did in the garden. And that is WHO is supposed to be in you!

Why you not Presbyterian again? Your liturgy doesn't sound baptist.
