Toyota YARIS Hybrid 2022 - Intense Engine Braking / 'Over' Revving -Continuous Downhill Driving

preview_player
Показать описание
When continuously driving downhill with a Toyota Hybrid vehicle an MG2 (Motor Generator 2) charges the hybrid HV battery fast and when the battery is fully charged the MG2 starts dumping most of the produced energy to the MG1 which starts to spin the engine. This process automatically starts when the HV battery is being fully charged and driving in "D" mode but it's much more intense in "B" mode (B - engine braking mode). Almost all braking is made this way in B mode - this way the physical brakes are almost not used at all (they engage if you press the brake pedal intensely) and this saves the discs & brake pads from overheating and make's them last much longer.

I experienced this driving in the Swiss Alps downhill with cruise control engaged. In the beginning the car was driving quietly and then it got louder and louder, as it would do in B mode. I really love that the cruise control also decelerates to keep the speed.

Extremely useful. My gf has a car with the same feature and I was wondering if I was using it correctly. Now I know I was right. Thanks 😊

Andrej, welcome to Toyota Hybrid club :D, it was also similar situation with me and my Toyota Auris TS Hybrid. Like you said, it is feature not a bug :). I can tell you that I am very happy with my Toyota hybrid, it also fine on normal drive on highway (between 4.8 and 5.2l) and really it is very cheap for maintenance ... so happy driving and lotst of km ;)

The only way B mode makes sense after experimenting with it in a 2021 yaris is if you don't accelerate at all when you go downhill which here in the UK at least on my routes never happen because obviously after going downhill, there will be an uphill so no increased mpg in the end. I'm experimenting with B mode instead of braking before a roundabout on the motorway/highway to see if it's doable, but it seems to me like the end result will just be D mode all the time. Eco in D mode, end of story, but let's see..

If you had an OBD computer you could see the engine spinning at 4000 rpm's, like clutch off in first gear. But it doesn't feel like first gear because of the indirect connection

I experienced the same two days ago, as we had new Yaris for rental on holidays. It is brilliant piece if technology and great to drive. My wife has previous version with smaller NiMh battery, I have to test if it does the same.

I have a prius 2007 model.
If I go downhill with D and the battery get full charged, and continue to go downhill this will damage my battery??
