I remember those charts, very well, both in high school and college. They were used as factual proof of evolution. Turned out to be like so many other proofs that were wrong. The Java man and the Nebraska Man are just 2 of many examples.

Oh dear, are we back to Haeckel again? Can't they find a guy who has been dead for less than 100 years to criticize?

A short recap of a standard refuting of creationist whining about Haeckel's embryo drawings:
1. The drawings were schematic, and didactic, not meant to be photographically accurate, as we can clearly see because they are all the same size. This was the norm for this type of illustration at the time, as it is nowadays for explanatory purposes.
2. Haeckel cut some corners by reusing plates in the first edition of the book, was called out on it and corrected the error. He then kept improving the illustrations over the course of the following editions. This shows it was not an intentional fraud.
3. The problematic drawings are from the earliest versions. The later versions that were not or at least much less problematic were the ones that were reproduced in later textbooks.
4. Many modern textbooks show one of the (copyright free) plates as an illustration of the controversy, with an explicit disclaimer.
5. Many modern textbooks make similar points to the ones that Haeckel made with his (schematic and exaggerated) drawings using photographs, proving that criticism of the drawings or of Haeckel has nothing to do with the validity of the underlying principles.
6. Although Haeckel's own ideas about how embryos develop have been superseded, they did contribute to the start of the modern field of evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). The insinuation that a whole field of science should be dismissed because some early drawings in this field were dodgy is so silly that it borders on being fraudulent itself.
7. Professor Michael Richardson, whom Mr. Smith quotes from 1997 at the end of this clip, wrote later, in 2002: _"Haeckel's much-criticized drawings are important as phylogenetic hypotheses, teaching aids, and evidence for evolution."_ This is not to say that he changed his mind, but rather to show that quoting people can be as dodgy as copying illustrations.

Well the drawings may have been fake but if you look at them they are very similar hinting at a common ancestor.

The funniest thing about this video is that the image used isn't Haeckel's drawings but what the embryos really look like. Yes Haekel seemed to have fraudulently created evidence, but that doesn't mean he was wrong, as AIG have accidentally shown.

Humans and animals still form in a very similar way. The drawing were just not as accurate as they actually are.
