They made Plummer's character a self aware villain rather than a run of the mill pawn of the system. Right down to his right on the line uncomfortable contact with Connelly's character. Really sucks the reality out of the film for me. Manufactured obstacle antagonist injected with an dogmatic, unrealistic devotion to obstruction for obstruction's sake. Someone call Jean Valjean this dude is ripping off his bit. I don't need to see the whole film to feel guilty I initially attributed the success of this genre of film to the imitation game.
