It was time to bring in the harvest they were calling for a frost and we made apple cider on the Homestead with our Heirloom New England apple trees. We were all surprised how much cider we made with the number of apples we had.

Fun video as usual. R S got it correct below. That's a tomato horn worm. "Nasty creatures"! Kinda unusual to see one this late in Fall tho. Kill that pest. A worm that size can strip a tomato plant to the stem in no time. FYI//heads up, you'll have MORE of them next year. SO, when you put your tomato starts out next Spring, go out after dark with an LED flashlight and hunt 'em down. Some of their 'stripes' will flash back like 'neon' to make 'em easy to spot. Forget about wasting your time looking for them in daylight. You can literally put your hand on them and not spot 'em. some yeast and a bit of BROWN sugar in some of that cider and make it 'hard'. EXCELLENT 'adult beverage' for winter time 'doldrums'....LOL.

So interest in to compare this early farm to what you have today. Yet the pigs and chickens are still so well cared for regardless. That cider looks good!

Well that settles it then. We gotta have a cider mill. Apple juice and hard cider for us and a winter's worth of squeezins for the chickens to go with all the other goodies we'll be growing to feed em.

It is a Tomato Hornworm. I found this. "To keep hornworms away from your tomato plants next year, try interplanting dill or basil; marigolds are also an excellent companion plant and keep many pests away."
Wow, 5 gallons of cider from one sink full of apples. Imagine how much cider you could make if you used all your apples. You might think about trying to make some money selling apple cider. I am guessing it would be much more difficult to sell hard apple cider. But you could sell regular apple cider.
Your step-father seemed to like the apple cider. Is it good? He mentioned red apples, but I only saw yellow apples.

I was commenting about making cider on one of your videos a few weeks ago. This just popped up today. Your parents were sure having fun Al. I can't believe how much Olivia has grown! And a lot of farm progress in 1 year.

How about making a little hard cider just for the adults, Al. My Grandfather used to make hard cider for the family and would give pints to friends as Christmas gifts. Nothing like fall in old New England.
