Why do fish not be FRY when they get hit lightening

Показать описание
Lightning is incredibly hot, reaching temperatures of about 30,000 Kelvin (53,540°F or 29,727°C), which is about five times hotter than the surface of the Sun. This extreme heat is what causes the air around a lightning bolt to expand explosively, creating thunder. However, despite this immense heat, fish in water bodies like lakes and oceans don’t typically get fried during a lightning strike. This is because electricity follows the path of least resistance, and water, especially when it's a large body like a lake or ocean, conducts electricity across its surface rather than deep into the water. When lightning strikes water, the electrical discharge spreads out quickly over the surface in a process called surface conduction, losing intensity as it disperses. Most fish, which tend to swim deeper below the surface, remain largely unaffected since the current weakens significantly before reaching them. Additionally, saltwater is more conductive than freshwater, meaning that in the ocean, the charge spreads even faster along the surface rather than penetrating downward. However, fish close to the surface could still be affected or even killed if they are near the direct strike point.
