Looks like a nice way to lose the very thing that keeps you form getting lost!

I appreciate the care that went into the video production, but this looks like a sure-fire way to lose a compass.

My lanyard also came with a second black plastic bit that the lanyard tightly squeezes through. What's that for?

I just replaced my old Recta DP-6G compass by a new Suunto MC-2 and i am very satisfied about it.
Just one little remark. I don’t trust it to use the quick release on my compass. I prefer to attach the lanyard directly to the compass, and i use a 8 knot on the other side (end) of the lanyard. The knot here showed can release on its own, a 8 knot secures himself.
I wisch myself many pleasure with my new compass.

That's exactly why I've found two or three compasses laying along paths and out on game trails in the woods. Never connect your compass to a "quick release" like this. Throw that black plastic "quick release" in the garbage and use a larks head knot around the bottom like it shows in this video:

How is this a "quick release"? Not that I would want it to fall off, but it's pretty tight...

Am I supposed to trust this mechanism...?

If I drop the compass from 2 ft off a ceramic floor does this break the compass?

I must be a Class-A Dumbass because I never would have figured this out without the video. I just got my MC-2 and had those two black plastic parts... didn't know that one was a throw-a-way piece ... geeze. Maybe I should just stay in bed....hahahahahaha... Thanks for the video. Cheers!

Quick release on a compass as opposed to simply taking it from around your neck... ? Right... I pay this much for a good quality compass & trust it staying there to something that'll likely break or fail at some point.
No thanks. Think I'll trust the simple Lark's Head knot & store it safely or around my neck instead. That's worked for over 40 years so I see no reason to change now :)
Happy trails folks.

I thought for sure this was some clever device to allow quick release-- maybe I just didn't know how to use it properly.

This video clarifies that it really is as bad as it looks. One wrong bump or bounce and your $70 compass is gone. Please stop shipping your great products with such a bad clip.

After reading reviews, one from a person whose friend lost their compass this way, I'm throwing the clip in the garbage.

I love my compass, though!!
