After driving semi for 40 years, the best advice I can give to backing up is, steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. If you want your trailer to move left move the steering wheel to the left. If you want the trailer to go right steer the wheel to the right. It will eliminate all your double guessing

“Never approach the dock any faster than you’d be prepared to hit it”. That, my friends, is advice for the ages. 👍

To be fair, the hardest trailers to backup are small single axle trailers. Especially when the boat or ski is in the water and you can’t see the trailer. The smart thing to do is to install pvc guides. Not necessarily to help getting the vessel back on the trailer, but to see when you’re backing up.

The local barber shop in my town had a closed circuit link from the boat ramp playing on their TV. It was better entertainment than any of the other regular TV channels.

The smaller the trailer the more of a challenge it can be.

Hey!
I took your advice & took my trailer down to the walmart to practice,
but it WASN`T APPRECIATED!
The trailer was too wide for the aisles & my groceries kept falling out!

Little trailers with the tongue angle high (wrong drop on hitch) jacknife at the first movement back. Also, doesn't help that you can't see it through your tailgate!

3:40 also make note a trailer without a boat is invisible from the drivers seat. Need to put a flag on it and practice it empty

Because the ramp gets so jammed during holidays especially, instead of waiting a couple hours we modified racing go-kart pull stands to allow us to use a hand crank to pull the skis onto the stands then we can take them down to the end of the dock and slide them off into the water no problem. We have a 3.5hp engine and brakes so up hill or down is not a problem however we still use the ski trailer to load them.Have used the karts but it is extra work for no reason when it's time to leave unless there are tons of people waiting. The Kart is technically rideable with a hydraulic that lowers the cradle holding the ski down closer to the water or you can also slid it off with the tilt without lowering as well.

LOL! We often spend Saturday afternoons at our favorite local watering hole which just happens to have a boat launch beside it. We sit on the deck of the Pub and watch boaters launch their boats or pull them out of the water. It's astounding how many boaters are completely inept at this vital part of boating. I've seen vehicles roll down into the ocean, I've seen people forget to untie the back of the boat from the trailer, floating the trailer under their boat, or forget to put the drain plug back in, I've seen boaters trying to load their boat on to their trailer only to end up with their boat well past the trailer and sitting atop of their car. But the most common one is not keeping the trailer straight when backing into the water. I've seen people totally jack knife their trailer, sending it off the side of the ramp. And on more than one occasion I've watched so many attempts at backing up straight that I just couldn't take it any more and I've gone and backed their boat in for them. How they got their boat back out??? I don't know, I couldn't stay at the Pub that long.

My slip at the marina is next to the boat ramp and yes we get to see some of this.

Suddenly the truck you were in is in the water?
Maybe put on your emergency brake when you exit it and if you have 4 wheel drive, use it. The boat ramps in our area tend to get covered in Algae bad.

In Germany towing a trailer requires a separate certification on your driving license. I've heard it's very easy, but you do need to sit the a test specifically for towing, in order to be allowed to tow a trailer. And watching videos like this demonstrate that the Germans have the right idea.

Backing up trailers…raised on a ranch/large farm and was backing up trailers, first with tractors and then with our farm trucks at the age of 11 and 12…came in handy in the Army as I was always asked to help the cooks get their MKT’s backed in correctly…the best ‘possible’ food was always to be had for my squad 😉

A short coupled trailer, like the jet ski trailer, are terribly difficult to back up because you cannot see the trailer at all. Quite a challenge to back up something you cannot see.

I like how as the guy is trying to back the trailer down there is also a horribly loaded bow rider in the upper right corner. Just perfect.
