Edward Earl Hazel (April 10, 1950 – December 23, 1992)
'There is a special place in life,
A goal i must attain,
A dream that i must follow,
For i won't be back again,
There is a mark that i must leave,
However small it be,
A Legacy of Love for those,
Who follow after me'
Edward Earl Hazel

They played “Maggot Brain” at Eddie Hazel’s funeral on New Years Eve 1992 in Plainfield, New Jersey. It was a fitting farewell to a true guitar hero. More than any other song in the P-Funk arsenal, the stirring minor-key anthem will forever be associated with Eddie Hazel.

The song was created when George Clinton asked Eddie to think of the saddest thing he could possibly think of (his mother dying) and play it through his guitar. The resulting one take, 10 minute long solo guitar piece is, in my opinion, the greatest piece of electric guitar ever recorded. Eddie takes the listener through every emotion known from fear to lust, pleasure to pain, serenity to anger, love to hate and turns them into one of the most tear jerkin and gut wrenching performances on tape.

This video is posted on April 10 Eddie's Birthday, thank you for 'Maggot brain' it changed my life forever. Rest in Funk

I hope Hazel knew how respected he truthfully was. This dude was insanely talented. Hendrix and him paved the way for Lenny, Prince, D'Angelo etc.

Anybody can play a guitar, some are even pretty good and play music that makes you want to get up and dance. But every so often someone comes along that plays music you can feel with your soul. Eddie Hazel played music you could feel. RIP Eddie, you made me feel. Most musicians will say " listen to this", Eddie could make you feel it. Who says a funk band, can't play Rock?

REST IN 'P' EDDIE!!! I was at the wake. Tim Shider introduced me to his brother GARRY
(R. I. 'P'.). Too many memories. Have sent so many home from Judkins' Funeral Home. My Grandmother included. Too many tears. Eddie you were the best!!! Jersey's FINEST!!! Your family was and is one of the most musically gifted I have ever seen. One of your sisters whom I never met got up and sang at the wake and blew everybody away! Then Kevin Goins did the same. I thought your daughter Rebecca was going to sing. I guess she was in too much grief. This video hit very close to home. Thank you ever so much for this post!!! #RIP #EDDIEHAZEL #PFUNK #PLAINFIELDNJ #BROOKLYNNY #MAGGOTBRAIN

How awesome it must have been to have been mentored by someone with such mastery of an instrument that the music is felt as it comes from inside. Been a Parliament fan since they started and will always be one.
