What is an “Affix”?

An “Affix” is a letter or letters added to a root word to change its meaning. Prefix and suffix are terms used to further describe an affix. In other word “Affix” is a word used to describe both a “Prefix and Suffix.”

1. Prefix - Prefixes are letters which we add to the beginning o

f a word to make a new word with a different meaning. Prefixes can, for example, create a new word opposite in meaning to the word the prefix is attached to. They can also make a word negative or express relation of time, place or manner. 

 2. Suffix - A suffix is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word which makes a new word. Often, the suffix causes a spelling change to the original word.

 3. Infix - goes inside the word. It will be found in some plural words
