German Air Force Officers Having A Blast In KC-135 Refueling Simulator

German Air Force officers boarded a U.S. Air Force KC-135 mid-air refueling aircraft where they got to ride along during a refueling mission with the Iowa National Guard's 185th Air Refueling Wing.

During the flight they crawled in the back of the aircraft in order to witness a mid-air refueling of F-16 fighter aircraft.

Following the flight they were allowed to take the helm in a KC-135 refueling simulator, where they practiced refueling while safely on the ground.

As part of the Defense Military Reserve Exchange Program, officers from various NATO member states come to the United States to get first had look at how military reserve organizations in the U.S. operate.

About 40 years ago I was in the USAF and rode Space Available back from Hickam AFB in Hawaii to March AFB in California on an empty KC-135. I was lucky to get this ride as I was on leave and didn't take my uniform with me; I'd ridden out on a MAC flight which didn't require a uniform but KC-135s, as part of SAC at the time, generally required active duty members to wear a uniform to ride Space-A. The aircraft commander let me ride anyway, and I was freezing, not having taken a jacket. Those of you who've ridden Space-A know it can get pretty cold. They let me lay down in the boom operator's area which was like a padded bench with tank controls. Problem is that the coldest air was pooled at the lowest point of the plane, which was right there. I stayed as long as I could stand it, as there is a view out to the left and right of the boom. Nothing but ocean but still very unique. It was a great and relatively unique experience!

When I was a young kid our YMCA bus group went to grissom Air Force Base and got to sit inside of the boom operator seat on a KC 135 while it was sitting on the ground we also got to see F4 phantoms do low level flybys and at that time I believe grissomer for space was still a sack base strategic Air command but I'll never forget that as long as I live it was the coolest thing ever and you guys have the greatest job in the world.

i got to play with a sim once when i was doing my two weeks in the guard. lol i scratch the shit out of an f-22. i was just slamming the boom on the jet trying to spell my name on the sheet metal :D
