Hello and welcome! My name is Anton and in this video, we will talk about a study that tries to see whether Einstein was correct in his theories and whether Newton was wrong when it comes to gravity and massive objects.

Science is about learning. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with newton being wrong. I think it’s AMAZING! It means we’re one step closer to knowing more!!

Hey, to be was still probably the most intelligent person who ever lived. Think about what prior knowledge he had to work with, working in the late 1600’s. He described three laws of motion, invented calculus, discovered the light spectrum, was able to describe gravity on Earth in a vacuum, and invented the reflector telescope, which was basically a handheld Hubble telescope.

Even before I see your video I know it will be informative and entertaining.
Stay strong, Mr Petrov, and keep making these videos: They're excellent!

Sir Isaac would have approved, having himself (as he famously said) "stood on the shoulders of giants". He was the giant that Einstein surmounted.

I wonder if Isaac Arthur has ever done a video about the actual conditions (star types, compaction, radiation and orbital dynamics) within the hub of the galaxy? And what about the bars and the zones delineated by the bars, hub and disc of the Milky Way? Those are vastly different environs from the spaces that we are familiar with.

In defense of Newton, he said in his book (Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica) that he couldn't define what gravity was. Today, we till have a similar problem with gravity. From Einstein's field equations he defines gravity as a metric tenser. Thus, we say space-time when talking about gravity. This is a very complex topic. Especially for the discoverer of physic (itself) in 1687.

Newton was not wrong. It's just that Einstein was more right. If we ever get to a grand unified theory then I expect we will describe that as "more right" than Einstein. It's all a matter of perspective and, dare I say, all relative to the frame of observation.
We may never have the capacity to understand a grand unified theory but some sort of future artificial intelligence may. Hopefully we will still be able to pose questions and predict and verify outcomes of a unified theory though we may not be able to ever understand the theory itself within our own unaugmented cranuims.
If this seems a little sci-fi then we should put ourselves in Newton's shoes and see what he would think of what a talented individual like Anton can show us with the tools he has freely available. Tools now within the easy reach of a very large proportion of people on this planet.

"Pretty damn accurate" is about as good as it gets in science 👍

Newton was not wrong at all. Only that his physics works on non fast (speed light) and macroscopic level, the movement quantity of a photon from the Einstein equation is based on Newtonian laws too, the difference is that Einstein equation for the preservation of Energy is based on Pithagorean theorem in 4D, which we get from Lorentz transformations, extensions of time-space

Newton did ok considering he didn't have access to the speed of light constant!

I like these videos, but the title (as others pointed out) is exactly part of the problem when it comes to science journalism.

Newton's theory doesn't hold hold in strong gravity; this is observed to be the case, but it makes no sense to say Newton's theory is wrong, because that's outside the domain of validity of the theory to begin with. The title is making an unfair comparison.

unfair to newton, since he had no idea of the scale of the universe. (thanks for posting the Patreon list - I scroll through it frequently.)

No theory is confirmed "once and for all"---that is an unscientific perspective.

Newton has never been wrong. It's just a model working under conditions ( such as low masses/speeds)

Newton was "incorrect" is a more accurate than the word "wrong".
You have to keep in mind that Newton had less emperical data than even the most base scientist taught today with archaic technology added on as well.

Important note. This is a computer simulation. This is not an actual video of the stars.

That’s a simulation is based on the computer program and the information which humans put into that computer program.

That does not necessarily mean that what we are seeing in these computer simulations are in fact what happens for the real stars

I'm No physicist but, the way I understand gravitational lensing, , you are not bending light, you are bending the space the light is traveling in. From the light's point of view it is still traveling in a straight line. Or am I wrong?

Your channel is amazing. The way you use Universe Sandbox and SpaceEngine provides an outstanding visual to the concepts you discuss. Published papers are great, but the way you present the findings makes it much easier to understand. Thanks for all you do.
