Just to be a nerd:
In the original novel Dracula, he actually could walk in the sunlight just fine. It diminished his supernatural powers, but it didn't hurt him. I believe that started with the film "Nosferatu". So technically people have been changing the "vampire rules" all along.
It's just that the changes in Twilight were... well, mostly lame.

Speaking as a guy who hates twilight,  it  wouldn't have been bad if she focused on Jasper's background instead of Bella, Jacob and Edward. Even if he was a Twi-pire. I mean I would love to read a book about a vampire solider who could sense the emotions of the people he's brutally murdered trying to find redemption for all the shit he did while serving an evil vampire mistress
