Face ID makes even more sense on a MacBook imo… it’s definitely all about the thinness of the macs screen.

Why exactly do we need Face ID on a mac? I would argue that Touch ID is clearly superior on a laptop.

A lot of PC laptops have Windows Hello, so clearly it is something that is possible to do. I guess they just want you to have to take a specific action to authenticate it.

Distance from the screen can be a problem also. There are times where I have to lean forward to unlock my iPad Pro and it’s fairly close already. They might have to make Mac specific sensors that have a further range to accommodate.

They need to come out with an Apple webcam made for Mac mini’s and Mac Pro’s cause Logitech refuses to update their software to work with Apple silicon. Also if they could implement FaceID all the better. In the past they had the iSight webcam, so why not bring back the line.

maybe double tap the command key to verify a purchase

I am sure that there will be serious security concerns about a camera being required for access especially in a office environment. Personally I would prefer Touch ID or wearable like a watch. My cameras are blocked off at all times so would be useless for me.

Honestly, Touch ID is better because many schools and offices still have mask mandates, and although Apple has figured out how to make Face ID work with a mask, I have found it not as reliable as Touch ID. Plus, if you want truly automatic unlocking, Apple Watch unlock exists.

Just add a palm scanner to the trackpad. Problem might be solved that way.

It hasn’t been 5 full years though… I of course would love to see Face ID in a mac; essentially an iMac where it is in your office or just a stationary place (having it in the MacBooks would be amazing too). But please just be accurate xD

Great Question and Great Explanation !!!!

You use Touch ID like 2 times for each MacBook use. It’s not worth to have such a complex and expensive tech like Face ID on the Mac. It’s underutilized for what it is.
Makes so much more sense on mobile, where you unlock your device hundreds of times a day and security in the unlock action is much more crucial.

Is this really so hard to understand? It’s literally the only reason. I’m not even gonna watch the video.

I love the idea of my Mac unlocking when I look at it. It would be nice to just look at my Max and approve passwords and software. I like the idea of both Face ID and Touch ID to authenticate purchases.

The only way to do this is to have both biometrics. Touch ID for purchases and more 'serious' transactions with Apple Pay and Face ID for all other things (by default, toggle for only touch if external monitors are used).

They should definitely add Face ID to the MacBook Pro! Like why not 🤔

Honestly, Touch ID works very well on my MacBook Air, so I don't feel the need for Face ID on it. It's not burdensome for me to reach over and touch the Touch ID button.

On iPhone and iPad, Face ID scans the face of the user and asks him/her to look at the screen. So, when Face ID will be available on Mac, rather than pressing a key or a button when downloading an app or logging in on a website, I think we would have to watch a part of the display for a few seconds, blink one eye or something like that.
Also, as one of Apple's priorities is health, I imagine having an accessibility feature for people who can't use their hands. With the TrueDepth camera, they would control their Mac with their eyes.
Today, there is voice control on Mac, iPad and iPhone, but "eye control" would be for those who don't want to talk when controlling their Mac.
Also, there is also a face control on Mac, but after trying it, I find it useless while there is no TrueDepth camera on Mac.

Given one of the iMac configurations has a keyboard *without touch id...*

Touch ID on my Macbook pro 2019 doesn't always work reliably like before, always I have to clean up my finger despite of not having any oil or visible dirts, whereas face id works under any condition as long as your face is there :P.

I believe it is because of hardware limitations. If you put your iPad or iPhone (sensor and dot project) in position of camera of iMac, you will see it cannot recognize you we you are sitting behind a desk in front of it. This is the same issue that we after 5 years of introduction if this technology, doesn’t have a new generation of dot projector to unlock the iPhone when it is laying on desk without having to ben over and directly looking at your device!
