Best in 4K . The question is ; Can you charge/operate a SONY RX10 MkIV with external USB power?

Yes, you can charge the internal battery by USB-USB Micro using the Multiport charge-port ;
or Yes, you can operate the camera on an external power brick provided that a battery is installed in the camera - whether that battery is flat or fully charged.

but you cannot do both at the same time.
so you cannot run RX10 MkIV from USB power without a battery installed.
so you cannot charge the RX10 MkIV battery whilst filming with the RX10 MkIV on USB power

NP-FW50 Re-charge times SONY mains vs USB direct to camera vs 3rd party Andoer® fast charger - are revealed in this video.

Thanks for this video🙏 I am on vacation in Granada ( Spain ) and I forgot my charger at home! I was stressed bc I couldn’t find the charger in stores here ( it’s Sunday and all stores are closed ) I bought a micro cable from patrol station and charged my Sony RX10 vi with powerbank and it works great!

Thanks for the video. I didn't realize the "charging light" was the little yellow light near the USB port. I thought it was the red LED on the handle which wasn't going on when I attempted to charge via a power bank.

Have you considered the possibility that 0.5 amp is NOT sufficient to 'run the RX10 live' as you write, but just enough to keep the inserted battery pack NP-FW50 charging, while the camera itself draws a higher (or lower?) current from the battery? It just seems a strange coincidence that the charging current and the operating current would be identical. Some experiments with a fully charged NP-FW50 should be able to answer this question.

Thanks for the video
I have been looking for a powerbank to use with my RX10 via USB in emergency if my batteries run out of power outdoors
After looking on some photo forums I was getting the impression that you needed a minimum output
of 5V / 2.4A from a powerbank to power the RX10
Can I conclude from your video that just 5V/0.5A is needed to run the camera?
This would mean I could buy a cheaper lower output powerbank than I first thought?

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

00:00 🔌 USB Charging of the Sony RX10
- USB charging is vital for travel to eliminate carrying extra charging equipment.
- A micro USB port is utilized for charging, found on the left side of the camera.
- When inserting the USB, it doesn't click into place but rests lightly.
01:13 ⚡ Power Monitoring and Camera Operation While Charging
- Utilizing a USB power monitoring device shows the camera draws 1/2 an amp when charging.
- Turning on the camera interrupts the charging, demonstrated by the yellow light going out.
- Camera indicates it's operating on USB power with a charge symbol on the rear indicator.
02:00 ⚠️ Gentle USB Insertion and Power Draw Limitations
- The camera restricts its power draw to 1/2 an amp despite the power brick being rated for 2 amps.
- The USB cable should be inserted lightly and not be pushed too hard.
- The camera indicates charging with a yellow light which requires a few moments to illuminate upon plugging in.
02:53 🔍 Difference Between USB and Sony Multi-Port
- Distinct visual differences exist between the micro USB and Sony Lanc multi-port.
- The multi-port has a second locking press, requiring only light insertion for USB charging.
- Detailed comparison includes narrow 5-pin and broader 10-pin connectors.
03:21 🔄 Charging Duration and Power Brick Comparison
- Charging via the mains adapter took 3 hours and 26 minutes.
- Using a 2 amp USB power brick, which drew 1/2 an amp, took slightly longer (3 hours and 46 minutes).
- Charging was step-like in the last minutes, cycling one minute on and one minute off.
03:45 ⏱️ Charging Efficiency with Andoer Charger
- The Andoer charger charges at 1.2 amps and provided 1250 milliamps of charge after one hour.
- It progressively ramped down the charge until reaching 0.2 amps at the two-hour point.
- Even after disconnection at two hours, the camera displayed a 100% charge.
