The Giants of Jazz are: Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Kai Winding, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, with Al McKibbon on bass gave a live performance on the Newport Jazz Festival October 31, 1971 in De Doelen Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
This is the second piece 'Round Midnight'.

Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917– February 17, 1982) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't". Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.

Monk's compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations.
Monk was renowned for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk would stop, stand up, and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano.
Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine (the others being Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis).

I've never seen Monk look self-conscious, even modest and humble. Very touching human moment--esp. on a tour during which Monk and Blakey were reportedly at complete odds. He also takes a beautiful solo on his most famous composition "Round Midnight" (interrupted by the jazz piano ad).

Behind the piano he's a genius and a legend with a cool attitude, get him on stage and praise him in front of hundreds of people and he's like a deer in headlights.

Dizzy's intro to this tune was very heartfelt and touching to me.Particularly so since it is clear from the closeups of Monk during that intro that Monk was very near to the end of his playing days.

Man !

I thought i DIDN'T like Jazz...and it's true most of the time. King Crimson was jazzy enough to me, their first version '69 to 74.

But when i hear this man/all the musicians that keep it SO beautiful together, i hear FREEDOM in a Magical World we not yet entered in the flesh, except maybe in our Childhood..., AND, important:

I can clearly see Charlie Brown, finally lucky, getting his kite into the sky on a warm and windy Summer' s day, even Lucy not being evil-girl on that very special day...

I just don’t want to be that fastidious insufferable uncle who is all the time saying that in the past music was much better… but actually it was much better. Pure talent!

It's a shame that this particular recording has so many technical difficulties that it can't be enjoyed to its fullest
