The Harder They Come 1972 1080p Jamaican Church Gospel Scene

Astonishing sequence from Perry Henzell's 1972 reggae classic, THE HARDER THEY COME. Jimmy Cliff's character Ivan begrudgingly participates in the Christian congregation's singing during church service while Elsa, enraptured by the music, realizes how much she wants Ivan.

I possess no rights to this film and will gladly remove upon request by the creator(s) / owner(s). If anyone has any leads on more gospel from Jamaica from this time period, please leave a note or be in touch!

I think it's one of the most incredible scenes of the joyous abandon of all our worldly shackles ever captured on film.
Conscious music, roots conscious music has the power to do that too.

This song is just perfect beyond words. I only wish that the soundtrack to the film included the music & versions of the songs played on it. Cliff's studio version of "Harder" in the film is just the best version ever, much better than the original imo. I would seriously love to have this church scene track on cd so I could play it on repeat, & VERY loud. What a song.
Many thanks for this upload.

Despite somewhat crude audio quality and the use of 16 mm film, this is arguably the best musical scene in the history of movies. Someone should rerecord this song in exactly this style. Other versions are nothing like it, hard to even recognize them as the same song.

Perhaps more important than the song itself is the attention the director gives to various people's body language and faces, including Ivan/Jimmy Cliff (amused?), the different expressions of the two pastors (the older, literally Bible-thumping one joyous if not ecstatic, the other perhaps in fear of being found out for hypocrisy, jealousy or lust for his ward Elsa), and especially Ivan's budding girlfriend Elsa, as she realizes she's in love or lust with Ivan, making explicit the movie's comparison of sexuality with the widespread, but not universal, religious ecstasy in the church’s music service.
