Knitting Help - Simple Magic Loop

Most of us find that we don't always have the correct size of circular needle, in the correct length, for every project. Knowing how to work magic loop will allow you to use a long circular needle to knit a small circumference tube. This is especially helpful if you have an interchangeable needle set, which doesn't come with 16" cords!

Information on things you'll see in this video:

The sweater I'm wearing is my Ombre Dyed Sweater, pattern + video tutorial:

The sweater on the mannequin is my Zasio Sweater Coat, pattern + video tutorial:

The patterned project bag on the table is by dellaQ Knitting Bags and Cases:

The circular needles I'm using are Addi Turbos, available through many online knitting supply stores.

The yarn I'm working with is Rowan Magpie Aran, color name "Tranquil". (I do not believe that Rowan is making this yarn anymore.)

My nail color is by OPI, called "Every Month is Oktoberfest".

These videos are oldies but goodies. You are the best: clearly explained steps with no fuss, no extraneous information delivered in a calm voice and best of all without annoying, loud and distracting music! Your channel is my go to destination when I have a knitting dilemma!

Thanks so much! I can’t believe this 11-year-old video is still the most useful one on YouTube for this technique!

I have been an experienced knitter for years, or so I thought I was experienced, but I have never tried Magic loop. All those dpns I bought when I really didn't need to. This is so simple, I'll be trying it soon on a toddler's hat. Thank you for your always useful videos. They're awesome! You're awesome!

I do want to mention because this has happened to me. Before pulling the back needle to the right always make sure your working yarn is on top and not at the bottom. When I first started, I was getting really frustrated and it would make a yarn over because of the cord that I had on the right. I just think that's crucial for someone who is new to this wonderful technique

This changed my life 10 years ago. I still knit on circulars for everything. Ever since I saw this video!

Ohhhh that is amazing!  You have solved my complete misunderstanding of how to knit magic loop.  I have never used circular needles before today and didn't realise mine was too long for my work until I had finished casting on.  I am so glad I found this tutorial and so glad you took the time to make it.  Thank you xxx

Oh my God I've been knitting my sweater using Magic Loop and didn't even realize it, lol. I've always heard the term Magic Loop and assumed it was some next level, complicated technique...not just what I naturally do when my circulars are longer than necessary, lol.

You have made it so simple, thank you so very much. I have been knitting for over 87 years but will be happy now to try this. Thanks again.

Finally! Magic loop makes sense to me. I've watched 4 or 5 videos over the last year and this one is the one where it clicked. Thank you!

I started the sleeves on Joji Locatelli's "All of the Lights" cardigan, and quickly realized that there isn't a circular needle alive that is going to be small enough to knit the sleeves. I know I have DPNs somewhere in this house, but couldn't find them. I was about to go order 2 sets when I remembered hearing about Magic Loop back in the day when I was knitting socks on DPNs. I checked out your tutorial - and since I have a full set of ChiaoGoo interchangeables, this technique will work perfectly for my sleeves!

My wallet and I both thank you for making this so easy to understand! And best of all, I can keep knitting without having to wait for DPNs to arrive.

Thanks a million Staci. I’m going to try knitting some fingerless mitts and only had 32” needles. This will help me so I don’t have to purchase
yet another needle. You’ve helped me so much with learning anything to do with knitting. Your my go to girl when I need help. I’m not one to leave comments, but I watch your videos all the time and needed to express my appreciation 😊

You have no idea how many videos I have watched and I just didn't understand, or the video didn't explain well enough. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Yes I agree - watched a couple of other "magic loop" videos and ended up in a tangly mess!! Then I remembered your tutorial about weaving as you go and searched your vids for magic loop - brilliant (simply explained) and even though it's tricky in the beginning (twisted the work the first time) once you get a few rows done it works great and gets easier - thankyou

You are my Christmas knitting angel!! Am trying to finish my first ever sweater for a Christmas gift, and was completely derailed by how slow the knitting was going on the sleeves the way I was doing it! Thank you!!
