Devin Townsend – ‘Gratitude’ – track #4, taken from the forthcoming album ‘PowerNerd’

‘PowerNerd’ will be available in several different formats, including a Limited 2CD+Blu-ray Artbook (featuring the album, bonus tracks and Devin’s first-ever Dolby Atmos mix), Limited 2CD Digipak in O-card, Standard CD, Gatefold 2LP & Digital Album.

“Gratitude is a simple song in the vein of 'Life' or 'Stagnant' (from Ocean Machine and Terria, respectively) that acts as a simple way to continue the theme of PowerNerd. During the making of this album, there were a lot of hurdles that we went through as a family, and the tendency to look at one's lot in life from the vantage point of being a 'victim' seems to be an easy hole to fall into. I wrote this song during a very difficult time, yet the idea of gratitude is not meant to be ironic in any way. I’m grateful for the lessons, I’m grateful for the swings and roundabouts of life, I’m here for it. Retaining equilibrium during challenging times is a job in and of itself, and in a sea of nihilistic thoughts, having one's creative output as a tangible expression of gratitude is in many ways the whole point for me at this stage. In any event: I feel like I’m dumb as a rock, and life is so incredible and absurd, that I just feel the urge to say 'Thank you' for all of it. If the quality of people who surround me and this work is of any indication, we're pointed in the right direction. Thanks =)”

Lyrics:

You see me on top of the world now, Gratitude…
Gratitude!

We’ve got believe
Things will only get better
So you got to breathe…and say thank you

Mother, please let the kid enjoy
Mother, please let him be a boy

You see me on top of the world now, Gratitude…
Gratitude!
So easy on top of the world, I’m glad it's you…
Gratitude!

I’ve just come to say goodbye
(You don’t want it to die)
But I’ve had a great life…

…thank you

Mother, I’m hauling heavy loads
And mother, I long to be alone

You see me on top of the world now, Gratitude…
Gratitude!
So easy on top of the world, I’m glad it's you…
Gratitude!

Become a Devin Fan for his music. Remain a Devin Fan for the beauty of his humanity. And his emotional eloquence. And his transparent and articulate sharing of his artistic and personal journey. And his music.

"Mother, I’m hauling heavy loads
And mother, I long to be alone"
It's like he knows my situation and takes it upon himself to explain it for me!

Positivity is such a rarity in heavier music and I'm so grateful to have Devy delivering it. Thank you

Bravo! I am a retired US Army Officer and left the Army with severe PTSD. It was the toughest battle of my life and there were times I questioned my existence on earth. However, I healed myself over several years and now help others with PTSD for free because I am morally obligated to help others.

I had tears when I heard this song. The message is so uplifting, and the song is upbeat. I am glad that I randomly found this song.

This song and video have the major goosebump What I love about Devins music is that there are so many shades to it...mellow, heavy, pensive, angst, thought provoking and so much more. Love it!

This guy is beyond superlatives. You know what would make me fall to my knees in devout worship? If he ever nailed Nessun Dorma. It will never become a reality... one can but dream.

Devy is amazing. If you're looking for true musical genius, look no farther; there he sits. I'm glad I've been there from the very beginning and the Biomech days.

Ive spent the last 15 years consistently listening to Devo. My friends ask me why I have liked him so much for so long. It has taken me years to work out why. Its because Devo has the widest emotional range than any other artist. From "Heart baby" to "Shitstorm" and everything in between. Its a feat of artist genius to so skillfully express the whole range of human emotion. Fucking love it. You keep me going no matter whats happening in my life. Thank you Devo. ❤

Why do I feel such sadness when I listen to this song? It feels like bring punched in the gut and feeling relief instead of pain.

Thanks for writing this song! My own expression of gratitude saved my life, when I was unemployed during Covid and sitting on my couch with multiple bone fractures after a biking accident. Nobody was hiring. A pandemic was raging outside. I was in pain. But all I kept coming back to was all the good things, simple things like a roof over my head and loving wife. Gratitude is underrated. Thank you for filling my life with awesome music (and that scenery is fantastic!)

I love that the premier talent in the entire music industry has no qualms about releasing a video that looks like it's the new single for the local metal band that has 3 followers on Instagram

I'll need to listen a few more times before I catch all of the lyrics, but this is already touching me. I love and miss my mother, and I love and miss hiking in forests, I'm also grateful that I was ever allowed to have any of that so that I can remember. You look so awesome singing, Devin.
