What does the pheasant sound like?

The sounds of pheasants clucking and whirring as they fly away startled are typical elements of the countryside soundscape in Europe and the UK.

These colourful birds have been introduced in many parts of the world from their native locations in Europe and Asia. They've been naturalised in the UK for more than a thousand years so at this stage it's difficult to see them as introduced species here. They're part of the countryside as much as many other more "local" birds.

While they can be pretty loud, they live around busy roads and farmland which makes them difficult to record well. They are also quite shy and learn to associate humans with danger quickly in areas where they are hunted. Walking around with a shotgun microphone will not yield good usable recordings unfortunately.

I've tried to record their calls on several trips around the UK, and only managed to get some nice clean recordings on a trip to Devon last year. I set up several drop rigs in an area where I noticed they were hanging out a lot, and managed to capture them with one of these fairly close up.

Recorded with Sound Devices Mixpre 3ii and Schoeps CMC1u with MK4 capsules. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:
