I had another video planned, but today the yak stack needed tending after my trusty 10 MHz signal generator started buzzing horribly. Today's video will be a teardown, repair, and mini-review of the 2007 vintage Protek B8010FD.

Really nice cut video. I see the amount of work you put into that.

Hello & thank you for this video. I just received my Ebay purchase of this same unit, with the same fan noise. Your video took all the guess work out of fixing the problem. Cheers - Greg

"... right away this thing seems like kind of a time travel accident." =D

And bonus cameo from Tuco.

Wow this reminds me of a customers RS232 to CAN converter I had to integrate in 2012 which was designed around a PLCC Z80 with 90s datecode because the company aquired an incredible stock of all these old parts back in those days so they continued using them ;) Really weird though

Yuk! When you've got the knob off of the front panel we can see how yellowed it has gone.

Socketed slots are old but doesn't that make it easier to service if you have to replace a specific IC?

Great video, although the commentary sounds naive. Engineer involves economics, performance and date - so it's not always a good idea to reinvent things.
