Watch THIS Before Buying Cheap Cabinet Hardware Installation Jigs / True Position Tools

Shop-made cabinet hardware jigs work great for small jobs, but they get wore out and are only good for certain handles and certain cabinet dimensions. In this video I break down the differences between two cabinet hardware jigs that can be bought online: The True Position Tools jig and one made by Sugelarly.

I’ve installed cabinets for years. I found all doors are different. All hardware is different. One hole. Two holes. 3”. 3 1/2 “. So I made a jig for each job. Takes less than five minutes. Then when your done thro it away. Simple. Perfect. Free. Love you channel 😎😎

Guys like me need this video. Thanks. New guys: I've thrown away a wastebasketful of plastic gizmos in the last 40 years. If any part is plastic ask yourself how useful that tool will be without that piece.

Jody, thanks for another straight up useful video. Precision and accuracy are important to me and I appreciate seeing devices that provide that level of quality.

Thank you for sharing. Tremendous price spread in the two you reviewed. Amazon refers to several mid priced jigs that look comparable to the higher priced item. Bottom line is you would have to be doing a lot of cabinets to justify the price of any of the good ones.

Just admit it! You are a quality-tool freak! Welcome to the club. We can't all afford the best of everything, but there's no bigger pain in the shop than trying to make a cheap tool work right. We just need to decide which quality tools we want to spend the money on, and which tools we can "just" get by with. Enjoyed the video.

I bought the cheap jig and it is rubbish. One of the thumb screws I had to tighten my push lock pliers and it did not feel me with confidence when drilling the holes (too much movement for my liking). Fortunately, my first holes were perfect. But then the second attempt was out!!!! I am still using this jig, but taping up the door and marking the handle positions before drilling – checking and rechecking with the jig and drilling free hand.

Would love to Position Tool Kit but cannot justify the cost as a weekend wood worker 😁

I bought one of those "mid range" tools and it worked quite well for the kitchen I did and I have used it on a couple vanities too. Mostly it is in a drawer in my shop. The $150, that I did not spend is in an investment account and is now worth about $500.
I think you see my point...

Thanks for the video. Always enjoy your content. I got worried as I hadn't seen anything from you in a long time, might have been the YouTube algorithm. Glad you are back and have great NewYear.

I debated on the True Position one and bought a cheap Chinese version. On a standard pull it was off about 2mm. Drove me bonkers.
Tossed it and bought the TP version. Like going from a Yugo to a Bentley.
If you can in any way afford it, buy the True Position version.

Not sure if you’ve done a comparison with the king Charles jig. $400 was a little steep for the one that you demoed. Any thoughts?

One rule of thumb I use is if the exact same product is available but with a different name on it, then keep on looking.

Great Video. But I have a question what size drill bit are you using for the metal gig? A # 26 drill bit?

Good to see you back! While the TruePosition is likely the Starrett of the cabinet hardware installation world, I think (emphasis on "I") this is probably best for professional cabinet people who do this virtually every day. The plastic one is good for nothing based on what I saw. So the only 'mid-range' comment I'd offer is, purchases on these are dependent mainly on how many pulls and knobs you need to do. I'm fine with saving $ and making templates. You produce really good tool comparison content - have you considered a related video on the various Euro door hinge jigs?

Pretty interesting tools indeed, dude! 😃
Thanks for the review and comparison!

Great video content. These videos are so good to see. I couldn’t get your link to work on the flashlight 🔦 and other lights.

I’ve had good experience with the metal jig from Banggood. One thing you didn’t mention was the quick setup for setting the pull width by loosely assembling the pull through the guide bushes, which allows one to set up for unknown dimensions
