This is similar to a stainless steel divided plate that have been used in Indian, especially South Indian homes to serve "thali" meals for centuries. Different foods are placed in different compartments in the plate. It's often called a thali plate; it can be square, rectangular, or circular in shape. Almost every South Indian home has this in their kitchens. Indian restaurants overseas often use these to serve dosa or other dishes.

These are meal plates used in some restaurants in India.
These are perfect for Indian Thaali.
We have so many dishes for our lunch and dinner like lentil curry, vegetable curry, any vegetable fried, dessert, flavoured rice, pickle, rice crisps/papad, some salad, yogurt.
So each dish would go in to the small divisions and either rice/roti (Indian wheat bread) would go in to the larger area.

Reminds me of either a school lunch tray or a military field chow tray
