Potter SH-120 Sprinkler Fire Alarm Test & Demonstration

The Potter SH-120 sprinkler fire alarm is a special alarm that is placed normally on the exterior of buildings and sounds only when a fire sprinkler system has been activated. When the fire department arrives on the scene they see this alarm sounding and understand there's a water flow situation. The words, "WHEN ALARM SOUNDS CALL FIRE DEPARTMENT POLICE OR 911," or a phrase similar to that, is usually placed on the alarm when the system is not monitored or installed so that it doesn't automatically call the fire department. Therefore, when pedestrians see the alarm is sounding they can ensure the fire department is responding to the incident.

International Code Council: "an approved audible device, located on the exterior of the building in an approved location, be connected to each automatic sprinkler system. Such sprinkler water-flow alarm devices shall be activated by water flow equivalent to the flow of a single sprinkler of the smallest orifice size installed in the system. Where a fire alarm system is installed, actuation of the automatic sprinkler system shall actuate the building fire alarm system."

I have these on the side of my old elementary school except it was an MT4-WH-155-VFR mounted instead of the SH-120 depicted here. One of the other elementary schools has a SH series horn strobe mounted on the exterior, but it does not have the sprinkler alarm plate. My middle school is the oddball though; It has two Gentex SHGs near the the door to the kitchen and the milk cooler. I do not know what the third elementary has for outdoor alarms nor my HS. I'll have to find out next year!
