In this video, Radford Racing School’s Chief Instructor, Danny Bullock shows us how to properly execute a heel-toe downshift, and in the end, he demonstrates what it should look like when you put all of the pieces together! What is heel-toe downshifting one might ask?

Heel-Toe-Downshifting is a technique used for shifting the car down in gear smoothly. It typically comes into play when one needs to downshift mid-corner because this process does not upset the balance of the car, nor does it put the car at risk of losing its wheel grip. Specifically, in what many refer to as a decreasing radius, this technique is implemented because as that turn gets sharper, that cornering entrance will require drivers to slow down.

Chief Instructor Danny walks us through the five essential steps in properly executing a successful heel-toe downshift. The steps of applying brakes, putting the clutch in, downshifting, adding a blip of the throttle, and then releasing the clutch will help even inexperienced drivers get a significant understanding of how this maneuver is performed.
