Kenya Election 2022: Raila Odinga rejects presidential result - BBC Africa

Raila Odinga addressed the public for the first time since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission [IEBC] announced the presidential results. He has described the results as 'null and void'.

He argued that the chairman of the electoral commission had no legal authority to announce the results that majority of commissioners had rejected.

In a separate meeting, four out of the seven IEBC commissioners said the final results were not analysed and processed by everyone in the commission which is why they disagreed with the final results announced by the body's chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

So what will happens next, BBC Mercy Juma explains.

Perhaps we need to start visual aggregation of election results where each totaling center accepts vote counts in an open space and then sends to the upper aggregation level in like manner. Losing an election so tightly contested can be hard and if the system leaves room for doubts, it will be harder for losing candidates to concede.

The way politicians fight for winning elections it's mind blowing, one would believe they'll one day make Africa a hunger free continent and time has proved they're all incompetent and they have selfish desires.
It will go back to the fact this politics we adopted is not healthy for us since we do not know how to handle it.

It's nothing new for Raila Odinga. He has been rejecting election results for the last 20 years or so. He even swore himself in as President while the official swearing in ceremony of the election winner(Uhuru Kenyatta) was taking place in 2017. He has endlessly made it clear that he can only accept election results when he's the winner. Its an unfortunate turn of events for Raila Odinga who cut a deal with Uhuru Kenyatta to support him while sidelining the deputy President Ruto. It's a political humiliation for both Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta as they have been overwhelming rejected by the electorate. William Ruto won by a landslide even in Mount Kenya which is Uhuru Kenyatta's backyard and home constituency. It's worth noting that the four election officials who said they don't accept the official election results were appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta last year so in a way they are biased against Ruto. This is an eye opener and the legality of a President appointing high level election officials should be looked into. A President who obviously has interests in who wins the next election should not be allowed to appoint election officials. Its like a defendant or Plaintiff appointing his own judge in a case. Atleast this should be a job for the Parliament and these officials should be vetted. Nevertheless, Raila Odinga will proceed to the courts of law but I don't see anything solid coming out of that. He has no evidence of the election being rigged. Courts demand evidence and not hearsay. Congratulations to William Ruto the 5th President of Kenya and best wishes for Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta!

Raila is indeed a statesman, he has choosed to go to court and preached peace to his supporters, he is always mocked but one thing for sure, he has always stated the country is bigger than an individual, just like in 2007 where he agreed to take the Prime minister position, if he was greedy we all know what would've happened

Raila is the most predictable politician. Every 5-year, the cry baby repeats the same boring chorus, "I was rigged..." without realizing even if Ida Odinga is the Chairman of the IEBC, the outcome will be the same: " I hereby declare anybody but Raila as the President Elect..."
