A lot of people think of Kansas and immediately think of it as a relatively state covered in cornfields. While it's true that agriculture is a big part of Kansas' identity, there are quite a few travel destinations found within its borders that we think you should know about!

In this video, we'll be taking a look at some of the top attractions in Wichita. Kansas' largest city. While a bulk of Kansas' top travel destinations are located on the eastern end of the state, Wichita can be found in south-central Kansas along the banks of the Arkansas River.

Witchita got its start back in the 1860s as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail, which was used in the post-Civil War era to transport cattle from ranches in Texas to Kansas railheads. Wichita was then incorporated as a city in 1870. Because of its historical status as a destination for cattle drivers to stop and recoup their supplies, it's earned itself the nickname of “Cowtown”.

Wichita is home to numerous alluring attractions and museums, including the state's most-visited outdoor attraction, the Sedgewick County Zoo. There is no shortage of culture, nightlife, and dining options awaiting you in this great Midwestern city. Best Things to Do in Wichita, KS

Back in the day Old Town was a funky industrial type area. The warehouses daily trucked out supplies to local restaurants, cafes, and more. Today the warehouses are restaurants, entertainment and more.

If you’re looking for a place to hang, then it’s the Coffeehouse located at 1144 Bitting St., at corner of Bitting St. and W. 11th Street. Located near Riverside Park it has a great vibe. The area and this corner in particular has been socially active for decades. Checkout it out.

Another popular place is "Chisolm Creek Park". It is a city park with deer, waterfowl, other wildlife and hiking trails. It is free. "The Great Plains Nature Center" is there also.

Visit the old Wichita City Hall located at 204 S. Main St. There the building housed city council and Wichita police department until the early ‘70s. Wyatt Earp served there back in the day. Adjacent to the old city hall is a Carnegie Library building that served as the city’s library. I checked out book back in the ‘50s as a kid.

Visit the Davis building on the campus of Friends University. The building dates back to 1886 and was originally named Garfield University after President Garfield. The campus has a wonderful history.

Tanganyika Wildlife Reserve is not actually in Wichita, KS. It's in Goddard, KS.

I'm more interested in what people can do that is free and are outdoors. Like hiking and spending time in nature in and around Wichita preferably under an hour away.

I’m a native of Wichita. The name of the river is pronounced, by Wichita natives, as “r-kansas” rather than Arkansas as in the state. That’s how we tell who are the visitors.

The Keeper of the Plains is not holding a peace pipe. His hands are a gesture worships earth, sky, and water. At least that is one story told about the statute in the early days of its existance.
