For people who are about to have this test and are apprehensive, I just want to say it was not a bad experience for me at all. I'm in my 60's, have asthma and have been getting very short of breath with exertion. I was filled with anxiety because of all the comments saying how horrible it was but, for me anyway, it wasn’t bad at all. I hope this helps someone not dread it quite so much.

As a respiratory therapy student, I found this video very helpful. It's one thing to read about it, but to see it actually done helps tons!

I'm getting this done tomorrow and thought I'd look at the procedure.

I am thankful for this video, and the comments people had. My husband is having lung problems, but said he will be refusing the PFT because he is claustrophobic. After seeing this, he says he could do it. So glad.

This is a good video in that it shows the three typical PFTs that are done, however, it is so completely UNREAL that it is offensive to many patients with lung disease.  It is offensive to me and I don't have a lung disease.  My mom had IPF and has since passed away.  I watched her do these tests countless times.  I myself do them once or twice a year now (for 5 years) as the doctor is keeping an eye on my lung health.  The woman "demonstrating" here is clearly not doing them properly.  This video needs to be refilmed - with someone REALLY doing these tests.  A patient really has to blow hard and WORK to do these tests.  They take DEEP breaths and when they do those quick blows out, they are a "POW!!" type of blow.  Then it is PUSH PUSH PUSH - using those tummy muscles and turning red in the face - to get every little bit of air out of the lungs at the end.  Please consider refilming this and posting the REAL PFTs so that people truly understand what they are like.  I know countless patients who will thank you.

I had to do this to become an Officer in the Public Health Service and passed the test. I was disturbed that I passed out three times while blowing all the air out of my lungs. The tester said it was common for men to do that. It caused a massive headache.

I’m having this done tomorrow and this looks terrifying. I don’t know if I will be able to be closed off in that little room without having a panic attack.

in my opinion the nurse seems a bit rude. Very forceful in my opinion, I would not want to be treated this way.
I hope they review this video and make a change in the structure of this process.

This video has been super helpful. I as well have to pass this test before trying to serve in the military. I have taken this test once but wasn't sure what to do and failed it. Monday I take it again as a last effort to join. Prayers it goes well please! Xoxo

I am about to have it done for the second time and I am not to excited about it. The last person that gave me the test was so rude and could not explain it properly. He was getting mad every two minutes and my grandmother had the same experience with another guy as well.

I was diagnosed with asthma when i was 18 months old. Im now 17 and the symptoms have pretty much gone away. Im planning on doing NROTC in college so I'm going to have this test done to confirm that its gone and so ill be able to serve. Wish me luck!

Well, It's too bad that not all PFT mouthpieces have a rubber flange at the end.

I have sarcoidosis and have had years of this Pulmonary Function Test. It's just something that gets you a little winded/tired but it is not a big deal. Hey, you're not lying there full of tubes and needles so it could be much worse. The booth is hilarious. Like a game show! I never was in a booth and I'd bet most taking this test were not either. However, this is much like my experience only mine is over more quickly and there is no booth.

This test is the most awful test ever. It always leaves me feeling light headed and dizzy. I have asthma and the technicians running the test often act like I'm trying to be difficult when I become red faced, light headed, start coughing violently and can't blow anymore in fear of passing out. It's so frustrating and never a good experience.
