A cursory examination of John Stuart Mill's five methods for inductively determining the probable cause of any given effect. Note that the fourth method (method of residues) can also be construed as a deduction!

Thank you so much for the video! So much better than my 1.5 hour lecture...

I'll one-up the commenters saying this explained Mill's Methods more effectively than a full-on lecture. This video explained Mill's Methods better than the youtube video my instructor provided that is literally a computer-generated audio of a Wiki article. It is deplorable that a university degree is now the lowest common denominator and that I have to waste my precious time and money on an "education" like that just so I can daydream about buying a house someday.

It seems to me that Mill's first approach, the method of agreement, is not satisfactory if taken as explained in this video. For is there not the possibility that *all* the food in the restaurant has caused illness? I think this option can only be excluded if someone did not eat the seafood and if someone else only ate the seafood. The hidden assumption in this video then, is that only one dish has caused illness...

Update: this is covered by the caveats at the end of the video. Would've loved to have seen them pointed out at the beginning, or used as an thinking exercise.

I'm afraid your explanation of the joint method isn't quite accurate. Looking at Ellen, Jack, and Allison establishes that eating beef might be sufficient to be sick (the method of agreement), but it shows a similar possibility for eating seafood. To narrow it down to the beef, you need to employ the method of difference, which happens if you compare the cases of Jack and "You, " since these are the only two that differ with respect to the independent variable and are similar with respect to all the possible causes. Simply noting that "You" didn't eat beef and didn't get sick doesn't quite illustrate the application of difference.

Also, while your explanation of residues is explanatory, it's not exactly an example of a causal relationship.

Your explanation to their approach of mill's joint method is insufficient for me to understand it
