Theory. He has a devil fruit that somehow relates to the Greek mythological Owl Styx. Some legends say it knows everything that has happened since it lived through it all, Maybe hinting he has knowledge of the Void Century or at least God Valley. Styx is also associated with the Greek underworld and eminenting or spreading darkness, two things that link back the Blackbeard: if the Cerberus theory is taken into account. Lafitte is definitely more than we see and currently know.
He is the second in command, chief of staff, navigator and the only one we seen be able to boss around other Blackbeard pirates such as Burgess. He also threatened to kill Pizarro for disrespecting Blackbeard.

Coupled with his strange background as a sadistic sheriff and being named after a real life pirate, it seems to me that Oda is cooking something with Lafitte.

i feel like people are neglecting something very important. Lafitte can hypnotize people, and THEY HAVE PUDDING.. combined with the rubbings he stole from Law, unless both Buggy and Shanks can secretly read poneglyphs, he's basically the only real competition Luffy has
