At least Clark know how it feel to be in the darkness amd strike fear into his criminals that he fought after exploring his dark side as the Demolisher. This standpoint is what Bruce was talking about when he said that he can't kill his enemies because he would only be just as bad as them and become the monster that he will be if he started killing.

This is false. He didn't retire the identity after Lois almost died.

He saved Lois as Demolisher from a bunch of criminals who were trying to hurt her.

When she saw how brutal he was and he kissed her as Demolisher, she published a story about how the Demolisher is no better than the criminals. Which made Superman realize she was right. In his opinion.

He tried to retire, but like Batman's problem with Zur En Arrh, his Demolisher personality took over and tried to destroy a power station, creating a city wide black out.

Unfortunately for Superman, the people of Metropolis still like Demolisher. He used Demolisher to rob a bank, and put the blame on him. Causing the people to lose truse in him. And Superman revealed to the public that Demolisher "unalived" himself.

Then Superman destroyed Demolisher's suit, retiring for good. Coming to the conclusion that if there's darkness in superheroes like him, then there's a little good in most supervillains.
