When I was little, I always thought it was awful that American healthcare was so expensive, but I accepted it as a harsh reality because I didn't know there was an alternative. Then in 5th grade, I learned that other countries had universal healthcare, and the concept made me so happy that I just had to tell my parents about it. They yelled at me for "talking like a communist, " which confused my little child brain so much. I thought they'd be happy about it, especially since we couldn't afford insurance. I also knew about the Red Scare and how silly much of it was, but I was surprised to see that apparently it was/is still prevalent among adults.

Only a handful of Americans know anything about socialism having 'kinds'. Hell, I've talked to people who eagerly proclaimed socialists, communists, anarchists, and Nazis are all the same thing. The propaganda model has done its job well.

Incidentally, my Great Grandfather was arrested for speaking German in public. He also happened to be an IWW member.

One of the things that I think a lot of Americans, myself included, have unfortunately internalized is the false notion that being a socialist or communist or even a liberal indicates that you're too lazy/weak/stupid to be financially independent and want the government to take care of you, and so declaring oneself a socialist comes with a lot of baggage and negative associations about your character as a human being in the US.

As a Brazilian this video couldn't be any better for our current situation.
Bolsonaro was elected on an anticommunist fearmongering platform.

Fear of the unknown is one of the greatest feats. Americans generally have no idea what socialism or communism or Marxism is so they fear it

This is such a relevant video, and not just for Americans. The Red Scare is alive and well, even in the poorer "western-aligned" countries that are being failed by capitalism perhaps even harder than the US is.

My father was a career military officer, and I spent most of my childhood on overseas American military bases.

Thus, I have more familiarity with foreign countries than most Americans, who are peculiarly isolated in ways I don’t think people in other countries fully understand.

We are among the most indoctrinated people on the planet.

I first realized how entrenched the fear was when I volunteered for the Bernie campaign here. All my older relatives, including one just 3 yrs older than me, expressed deep concern about him, entirely due to his embrace of the word socialism.

Everything points out to McCarthy not being a true believer in anti-communism, instead being an opportunist who saw in that the way to power.

Rest of the video 100% checks out, so well done!

As with any political movement, there are many varieties of socialist.

The most nefarious, by far, is Boogeyman Socialism, which exists purely inside the heads of American liberals and conservatives.

My fiancé comes from an all American, raised in the 80s and 90s conservative family, like literally the default conservative views and sunday service type. She literally freaks out when I say the word socialist, the brainwashing runs Like literally, the leave the country if you don't like it deep if you criticize anything about how the country functions, it's insane.

This is very relevant for other countries as well, like my home country Croatia. The propaganda worked so well that many people have been conditioned to say, upon hearing the word socialism or communism, "What about Yugoslavia tho?? Do you support Greater Serbia?? Are you not a *patriot*?" This all was a result of only 30 years of work.

Hell, when a democratic socialist, the tamest of tame socialists, candidate ran for mayor of Zagreb (and thankfully won) the opposition fearmongered about how he would turn Zagreb into another Yugoslavia and suppress true "patriots" like them.
