I think the most tragic one is the sloth route. Like, imagine having a nice family, getting older in the quite cozy home, eventually having grandkids, a whole life of peace. And then you die at old age and see a man trying to sell apples to you. I'd lose my shit

I don’t hate sloth Subaru. The thing is, he still ends up achieving the proper character development by the end, but it just takes him a lot longer to get there and it comes at a higher cost. Ultimately, he grows to become a good husband to Rem, a good father to Rigel and Spica, and a decent man overall. I believe he achieves overall satisfaction in life, and so I like to think he doesn’t have to loop after he dies of old age because of that.

Edit: This whole idea was on my mind for a while after leaving this comment, and I ended up writing a fanfic about what would happen if Subaru did go back after dying in his old age. It's called IF: Again, it's about as long as a light novel volume so far, and you can find it on Ao3.

I like sloth because while yeah it goes against the ideals that subaru has, his character development and many more things he atleast lived a happy life with rem. He atleast made rem happy and had two children with her. That's the only reason I like this route.

Honestly I just realized the other stories are literally the weakest versions of Subaru

Pride: Couldn't cope with being weaker than Reinhard, and to maintain his sanity decided to focus only on helping Emilia trying to convince himself that it is all for her

Wrath: Can't make ultimate decisions by himself (Needs coin to make decisions for him) for he is incapable of trusting anyone, and unable to try and understand the perspective of others

Sloth: Cowarly runs away and abandons everyone but Rem, because he couldn't fathom the idea that perhaps he could help them

Greed: Focuses on keeping people alive rather than actually saving them from their inner demons and problems. Also they are so insecure in their own choices to the point that they need Echidna and Return By Death to hold their hand.

Gluttony: Same as pride, possesing an inferiority complex, only this time it is directed towards himself [Natsuki Subaru], and unable to look for alternatives he decides to kill everyone.

Meanwhile, Envy overcomes all their hurdles without running away and while dying the least amount possible

It’ll be trippy if the IF stories were cannon. these were the timelines Subaru failed essentially. In one of the later arcs, he’ll have an experience that shows him other routes in summarized versions. I wonder how much it’ll change his perception of things

it's funny that if route represents what could have happened differently in each arc of re zero. Arc 1 being the pride if, Arc 2 the wrath if, Arc 3 the Sloth if, Arc 4 the Greed if, Arc 5 (idk probably still pride cuz lots of archbishops), Arc 6 the Gluttony, and we're not going to talk about the lust if.

Honestly I think the author should’ve made a more serious lust route. Like I would’ve loved to see a Subaru who wants to save everyone by becoming king so there’s no need for a royal selection while trying to balance all the problems that comes with being king and balancing trying to please all the royal candidates who you know already suck to please.
