Do you think that Meg Ryan’s career deserved to be put to an end after her appearance in the film In the Cut, or do you think that the public turning against her was for no good reason? The 2003 erotic thriller In the Cut is largely credited with being the film that put Meg Ryan’s time as a Hollywood superstar to an end. The actress had begun acting while attending college to become a journalist, and begrudgingly decided to drop out once the movie star roles started coming in. Her breakout turn came in the film When Harry Met Sally, which was released in 1989.

Throughout the 1990s, Meg Ryan was one of the most popular actresses in the world. However, this all came to an end in the mid-2000s, around the time that Meg appeared in the film In the Cut. In the film, Meg portrayed a writing professor that becomes entangled in an affair with a detective, played by Mark Ruffalo. Things in the film got pretty steamy, and Meg appeared in the nude. While many actresses had appeared nude before, there was something about seeing Meg in that way that the audience didn't like.

While the film In the Cut didn’t end Meg’s career immediately, it certainly changed the way that fans viewed her. Whether the reaction was deserved or not, Meg has never again received the level of attention that she did during the days before her performance in the film. Around the time of In the Cut’s release, the public was also turning against Meg because of rumors that she had cheated on fellow actor Dennis Quaid, which many believed caused the couple’s divorce. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at the role that ended Meg Ryan’s career for good.

I loved In the Cut ~ it was great to see Meg stretch herself as an actress like that. It's also one of the few Jane Campion movies I like, but that's another discussion.

Sad that the movie "In The Cut" is considered as Ryan's career downfall. I really enjoyed the movie. It had an erotic atmosphere with beautiful cinematography. Flawless performances from Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Kevin Bacon.

A very underrated actress. Watch three of her films back to back and you'll likely see three very different characters. She was damn good in this film too.

There's an obvious hypocrisy between what fans accept from male movie stars and female ones. There were always roles for "cute girls" but when the looks start to go, those roles dry up. The actress can either expand (if they are good enough thespians) into supporting roles or jump to the "mommy track" and make much fewer films. We see far less of many of her contemporaries too such as Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer. It's just the way Hollywood works and most actresses claim they are glad to be free of the Hollywood meat grinder. Just enjoy your millions, Meg, and be happy you got out when you did.

I thought it was because of the plastic surgery that altered her looks that ended her career.

My recollection is that the scandal of the messy divorce between her and Dennis Quaid tainted with the rumors about Russell Crowe did more damage to her than did a movie role. None of this hurt the reputation of the men, but Ryan suffered a lot of condemnation at the time, as I recall. I also don't believe Ryan's career has ended...she has changed course, as all aging actresses have to because society is very unkind to older women and very accepting of aging men. I think the title of this video is misleading.

The public treatment of her seems unfair to me, especially considering Ruffalo's career was enhanced by the same movie.

Pretty sure it was the affair with Russell Crowe and the failure of Proof of Life that did more damage than In the Cut. Then there was the follow up Against the Ropes, The Women, and In the Land of Women that sealed her fate. I still love her tho. I hope she makes a comeback.

She should not have Been judged so harshly. I loved all her movies. She was a great actress.
It's a shame people can be so harsh. She definitely didn't deserve this. ❤

In my opinion, I think a lot of the outrage that came from the release of that movie was ginned up by the media. For the most part she was always recognized as a cute sweeter than sweet actress and to a degree was typecast as that. However, the Hollywood community is extremely toxic by nature and they will turn on anybody at any given moment if they feel there is something to gain from it. I saw the movie and while it was definitely a dynamic departure from her cotton candy rolls I think she portrayed her character well. The fact that the movie was not particularly well written is really not her fault. Strictly speaking, I think she really got burned out on Hollywood nonsense and decided to park company of her own volition. Frankly, the idea of that movie ending her career as the subject of this video is kind of weak in its premise. In fact, I think if she wanted to act again she could go back and get good rolls anytime she wants. Simply put, I don't think Hollywood dumped her so much as she dumped hollywood. LOL
