The ancient history of Saudi Arabia often falls under the radar. There are megalithic stone monuments in the north of the country that are often overlooked because of more spectacular monuments found around the world

.

But now, a large ritual platform, dating back 8,000 years, has been discovered that sheds new light on the ancient history of the region and its trade links to Ancient Egypt.

An international team of archaeologists led by Dr Olivia Munoz of France’s Nationwide Center for Scientific Analysis, found a 35-metre or 115 foot-long triangular ritual platform buried at an oasis settlement known as Dumat al-Jandal in northern Saudi Arabia.

It’s a fantastic discovery, but what made it even more incredible is that inside a looted tomb were artefacts from Ancient Egypt. Watch this video to learn more and please subscribe to Ancient Architects.

So much under that sand still undiscovered! Such a long history. I know that there will be many great finds in the future.

The Arabians of the time were renowned travelers and traders, I think it more likely the peoples of Arabia traveled to egypt in hopes of finding goods to trade.

Ancient Egyptian genetics are semitic and mediterranean in origin. No real surprise to find links in Arabia.

This burial would have been a person of some importance, or reverence. Until more modern times, the color blue was extremely difficult to make and expensive, which is why we see it paired so often with Egyptian gold designs and artifacts. I've read that naturally blue minerals like Lapis were more valued than gold. So to see a scarab painted with blue enamel is quite important!

Decades ago I was able to visit the ruins of the Sabean city of al-Ukhdūd [modern Najran in Saudi Arabia], and the Nabataean city of Petra [in Jordan]. They are awe inspiring and the former was not easy to visit even before it became a war zone. Be sure to thank Matt fulsomely for taking us vicariously to far away places of great historical interest. شكرا جزيلا لك أيها المخبر الأثري العظيم!
[Many thanks o great archaeological sleuth!]

When I first saw the video title I got excited. 6, 000 CE Egyptian finds in Saudi Arabia? That would be truly jaw dropping. Ever since Wallis-Budge noted that the religions of Sumer and the Old Kingdom were too similar to be the result of cross cultural trade influences; he suggested they might have had a common ancestor. Fo= some 100 years archaeologists have asked but where. 6, 000 year old Egyptian discoveries in Saudi Arabia might have provided a hint. Oh well. Still New Kingdom finds in northern Arabia are pretty cool. Antiquity is an excellent journal.

This is hugely awesome. Hope someday we can know who built it, because seems it passed from hand to hand many times.

From the aerial photo, it appears that there is much more to be discovered in that region...also appears to be an interesting geological formation...like a huge sink hole, or landslide or something! Thank you for sharing this very interesting find!
