This seminar was given on Wednesday 7th December 2016 by second year PhD student Emma Dean.

'With the recent detection of the gravitational wave signal GW150914, we are now entering a new era of gravitational wave astronomy. In this talk, I will take you on a whirlwind tour of gravitational waves from Einstein's general theory of relativity to the gravitational wave observatory LIGO's groundbreaking detection. On the way, I will explain what a gravitational wave is and how they are created. I will then discuss my research on how gravitational waves are generated by neutron star mountains. Finally, I will consider what the future holds for gravitational wave astronomy. After this I will talk briefly on what life is like as a PhD student.'
