SAJJAN SINGH RANGROOT releases in UK cinemas nationwide on March 23rd 2018. As the country celebrates the Centenary of the end of conflict of World War I, a remarkable new film honours the involvement of Sikh soldiers in the British Army. Sajjan Singh Rangroot, which releases nationwide on 23rd March, is inspired by the story of the Lahore Regiment of the British Indian Army, follows the regiment and the challenges it faces through the eyes of soldier Sajjan Singh Rangroot.

The Punjabi movie (with English subtitles), starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, traces the arduous journey of the Indian British Army’s Lahore Regiment as it takes on German forces during the war. The film highlights themes of alienation, discrimination and loss whilst also celebrating the bravery of Indian soldiers who put their lives on the line for their colonisers.

Whilst Sajjan Singh Rangroot, follows the tumultuous journey of one soldier in war, the soldiers’ story highlights a number of facts that remain unknown to many:

· The Indian Army contributed a large number of divisions and independent brigades to the European, Mediterranean and the Middle East theatres of war in World War I.

· Over one million Indian troops served overseas, of whom 62,000 died and another 67,000 were wounded. In total at least 74,187 Indian soldiers died during the war.

· In World War I the Indian Army fought against the German Empire in German East Africa and on the Western Front.

British actor Darren Tassell, who plays Sergeant Mark Campbell, a battle-hardened soldier who trains the British and Indian troops and leads them into each battle. He says of his experience on the film:

“During my time on Rangroot, I learned so much about the Sikh culture and about the story of the Indian troops joining the British troops to help us during WWI & WWII. I had never heard such things before and it was a real eye opener for me. It also seemed that the story of the British and Sikh solders has never been told, therefore it is of upmost importance that we tell the story as accurately as possible and do these brave men the justice they deserve.”

The period drama, which was directed by leading Punjabi film director, Pankaj Batra, is based on the experiences of Sikh regiments on the front lines of the war, and was shot on location in Brentwood in Essex as well as in India. For Batra, the story has huge significance in the cultural history and impact of the Sikh community and needed to be told:

“2018 marks a hundred years of the end of conflict and much has been done to commemorate the brave men and women that played a role in this horrific war. However, so very few people both in England and in India know what an important role the Sikhs played in the British Army and I believe it is a story that must be told, not only as an acknowledgement but to ensure that the story lives on through the younger generations of Sikhs.”

The first trailer of the film shows the high production values and stunning cinematography by Vineet Malhotra, with each and every frame of the trailer showcasing the intense emotions one goes through at the time of war.

Sajjan Singh Rangroot also stars newcomer Sunanda Sharma alongside Yograj Singh, Jagjeet Sandhu, Dheeraj Kumar and Jarnail Singh in key roles alongside a British contingent that includes Peter Irving, Darren Tassell and Caroline Wilde.

Sajjan Singh Rangroot is produced by Jay Sahani and Bobby Bajaj of Vivid Art House and with music by Jatinder Shah.

Sajjan Singh Rangroot is distributed Worldwide by Omjee Group and Grand Showbiz Entertainment.

Apart from the historical inaccuracy it would be great to see a film about the Sikhs in WW1, contrary to what we see in the trailer most sikh troops were incredibly well respected by British troops as a lot of these men volunteered to fight our war, brave soldiers and beautiful people, I wish all the Sikhs the best

As a Brit I am so grateful and proud of the sacrifice Indian and Pakistani Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims made for my freedom. I see them as family and much closer than our European neighbours. The way they were treated was disgusting. But it brings me some comfort knowing they fought alongside us in our hour of need, and we won the war as one. Many colours, many religions, many nations, but one people. ❤️.

Without India and their Sikhs and their efforts Britain could never be what it is to day

Quite a lot of negative comments here. We should be grateful and respectful of the many brave men from all over the Old Empire that gave their lives to defend our freedom.

Thank you so much to all Indians who helped Britain in their time of need, and to all Indians today, I hope we can create closer ties with India in the future through the Commonwealth, based on equality, as many Brits(Im Irish) see the Indians more as family than Europe! We didnt treat you the best(though not as bad as a lot Indians make out) but we have always been allies, lets hope it remains so!

When I was a boy I used to make models of Spitfires and Stukas. I also used to read the Commando comics and Victor For Boys.
Today it would be seen as Jingoistic.
But I will always remember the stories I read as a small boy about the “Brave Sikhs”
These men fought fair, but fought hard.
With dignity, and with pride for the man next to them.
We are so lucky to have them help us in both World Wars. I like so many of us in Britain who are aware of the deeds and sacrifice given in the past, ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ

I think the British hating was over exaggerated a lot but I think this is a great insight into the Indian side of my army and the sihks are still highly valued up to today

My great grand father was in 9th Bhopal Regiment of the British Indian Army. He along with his fellow Indian soldiers, fought for British in France in the first world war. He was badly injured in that war and was later honorably discharged and decorated with several medals. I wish that we Indians learn to fight with the same bravery and professionalism defending our own homeland against the foreign invasions. I wish if we Indians unite as one nation of multiple ethnicities, languages and faiths.
