its really simple animation in 3dmax all what you have to use Slice modifier and move command, then play with time frames to put them in order, or use a script its name key shift, there are also many ways to do same thing using maps methods, these are many scripts and plugins for 3d studio max to help doing this as will, but honestly with slice and move you can do them all

I found this video to show to my CAD students in high school architecture exploration. Local manufacturing businesses are looking for employees that can animate their products.
