Those who believe that the Evinrude is only faster because it is the H.O. version should not forget that the Yamaha has a displacement of 4.2 litres! The H.O. only has 3.4 litres. More cubic capacity usually produces more torque. And yet the Yamaha cannot keep up.

I will say it again etec are the best built out boards ever. But as of may 2020 that's the end of more than 100 years of Evinrude. Olie Evinrude is probably really said that they stop making his best outboards.

I was sceptical when I got a 2019 40hp etec for my tinny but I can assure you it's not bullshit 40hp 50hp 4 stroke mercs and a 60hp 4 stroke yamaha on similar boats and I just dust them.. came with a 13 pitch prop . So far I've gone a 15p and a 17p ss viper and now looking at a 19 or 21p .. it still just revs out with 4 on board..this motor has totally blown my mind on its get up and go..as for fuel consumption it chews fuel, no where as good as they say on fuel, my brother has a 75 lean burn suzuki on a 4.8 and uses less fuel than my 40hp
And as for quiteness It's bullshit to not to loud but a lot louder than a 4 stroke that's for sure..
As for cold starts etc first turn every time never let me down ..anyhow that's my experience with my etec anyway chews fuel and loud but hauls ass for what it is

Why Evinrude didn't stay with motors under 300hp makes no sense, their 2 stroke motors destroyed every 4 stroke outboard no matter who built it. Dumb business move, selling an Evinrude G2 2 stroke is easy against any 4 stroke, they can't touch the 2 stroke in power, acceleration and torque and in many cases achieve the same 3star rating for clean running. The new Mercury V-8 motors from 300hp up to 450hp rule the hi hp market, Evinrude could've ruled the 275hp e-tech 2 strokes and under....

Talk to the owners 5 years later and see who’s been in the shop more? Or the fact the Evinrude is loud and a lot more fumes than the Yamaha. Maybe reliability and the other factors mentioned is the reason Evinrude is now belly up? They should have given up on pushing their 2 strokes many years ago.
