Paint the plates to block off the holes gold or something to highlight the holes, but still block them off.

Mat do you know how the military rear lights function? The small cutouts actually let the following vehicles know their approximate distance from you by how the tail light looks. If you see 4 lights on each side, you are to close tactically (about 25 meters), if you see two you are about right 50 meters, and if you see one you are to far away and need to close it up.
