Still remember coming home after work those days and checking if everything was still ok on youtube. It was pretty scary, even the news here in belgium covered it.

God i still remember every second of that day and evacuating, rushing to put our dogs and cats in the truck, grabbing food and clothes and leaving literally everything else behind, neighbors running around screaming, the traffic that didn't hardly move for hours while we were all holding our breath and listening for news of the collapse, knowing we were basically trapped at a standstill right where the flood would come up and kill us. Most terrifying day of my life.

As a person with a Banqiao-Zhumadian origin, I wanna say the rebuilding and preventive work of this dam spillway is a blessing for the local people and region. The Lessons should be learned!

I'm glad the spillway worked. I live in johnstown where a massive flood killed over 2000 people due to a damn break about 200 years ago.

This video is very wrong.

First, the workers wanted to use the main spillway, the Governor ignored that and told them to let it overtook.

Second, the state did not order the evacuation, the Sheriff's downstream did. The state did nothing during this time, not Evan assisting in the evacuation centers in any way.

My family was affected by this. It made it difficult to even get a hotel because everyone was getting one

I love your videos. One small correction though…Oroville Dam is not the largest dam in the USofA, it’s the largest earth dam (made from dirt). It’s quite spectacular actually.

The poor construction on the spillway wasn’t from the original build. There was a winter storm on New Years Eve 1997 and the rain quickly melted the snow pack. This caused the Feather River to wipe out a majority of the Feather River Canyon above Lake Oroville.

Lake Oroville filled faster than expected, so they had to do an emergency release in an attempt to protect the dam. Like in 2017, the gates were set wide open to dump as much water as possible. The spillway was damaged at that time. The repairs and the quality control inspections weren’t done properly.

The improperly repaired spillway from 1998 is never brought up whenever the 2017 damage is discussed. There are records of corruption and bribery with DWR (the company in charge of the dam). Favors/kickbacks were given when the repair bids were submitted in 1998.

This was discovered when people spoke out during the bidding process for the 2017 repairs. Sadly, even with the evidence of cover-ups, lies, and fraud, no one was held responsible. The state authorities just shrugged their shoulders and moved on.

Another issue never brought up is the fact that for years the water levels of the lake dropped so much the boat ramps at the other marinas were no longer accessible. DWR and the state built a parking lot and boat ramp on the west side of the dam.

A road was built across the emergency overflow spillway to allow people access to the boat ramp. By doing this, the road blocked the emergency overflow spillway; thus negating the effectiveness of said overflow spillway. The hillside below the overflow spillway wasn’t maintained properly either.
