What Open Water Swimming skill do you need to improve the most?

I love the content on this channel and find it very inspiring. So much so that I competed in my first triathlon with open water swim a few weeks ago. What I learned is that all this technique that looks reasonable in still water is irrelevant when the swimmer is struggling against waves, wind, and current in rough ocean conditions. I trained by swimming endurance distances in a local pool but I was not prepared for the real world of open water racing. Some tips on how to swim in rough ocean conditions might be scary to some but would be useful (maybe essential) to athletes competing in these conditions. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Haha I tried that rolling turn last weekend, I totally forgot I had a tow float on and I got all tangled up 😂

That turn mid stroke us pretty cool. I'm going to try it 👌

As a very amateur swimmer, I find a sharp turn kills momentum and time is lost essentially restarting. I prefer a steady turn over a few strokes that maintains forward speed.

Corkscrew works well for those with a swim background. I have used it to cut to the left of a swimmer I plan to pass coming out of a turn, they don't expect it and if timed well I get on their hip, draft for a bit and swim past them - pure open water races where tactics matter.

I'm pretty new to OWS, so I think I have been guilty of losing track of where I'm going next and wasting a lot of time at my turns. Of course, I have been getting better - my first time swimming open water I needed to stop two or three times and do a 360 because I had lost track of the FIRST buoy in the course.

They're going to open a open water swimming venue in Canary wharf soon so I'll keep these tips in mind
