Tinisha Spain and Martie discuss seed starting techniques, emphasizing the importance of garden hygiene and sanitizing pots and trays with hot, soapy bleach water. They recommend starting tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant indoors in late January and early February, while crucifers like cabbage and broccoli can be sown now. They advise using pelletized seeds for easier handling and suggest using a squirt bottle for watering. Candace Anderson from Illinois Extension highlights the 50th anniversary of the Master Gardener program, detailing its history and the various training options available. She encourages community involvement and volunteerism in gardening education.

FYI- A thin layer of vermiculite spread over the seeds, when starting, will help prevent dampening off, but also allow light to reach those seeds that need light to germinate.
