I really enjoy watching your videos on those techincal topics. They are consise and you explain it well, plus there is a bit of humour here and there to put a smile on my face. Maybe you should consider doing a Udemy course on networking or security/privacy or Linux for beginners?

Root name servers are usually used as a fallback, not generally in the lookup chain. Your device will look at the configured 1st hop DNS server - this is usually your router/gateway device or whatever that device specifies as the DHCP DNS server. If the record isn't found there your device queries the Start of Authority (SOA) record of the TLD. If no SOA record is found there, it *may* query the global Root Hint DNS servers for an address. If your device is t using DHCP you should have configured a DNS server manually on that device, then the same process occurs.

Hi Mental Outlaw, I appreciate that you made a video for an often overlooked topic when it comes down to security: DNS. Its the reason why good VPNs should have their own in-house servers: DNS Encryption.

This was a very good video!
Something that I still don't understand is how ip addresses can uniquely identify a website to this day since 4 bytes is only 4.2 billion and there are much much more than 4.2 billion websites. I know ipv6 was made as a solution but it seems that ipv6 is optional and hence couldn't actually solve the problem; I'm sure there's an explanation that I've missed

The problem with DNS is that it is centralised: the 'authoritative' name servers can simply lie about the IP address of any name you give it (or refuse to give a response) if it belongs to a website or service that the people running the name server don't like.
This is not theoretical. Domain names are seized for reasons like piracy all the time.
The solution is for everyone to use a decentralised name system, whether a blockchain system like Namecoin, Emercoin, ENS, and the like, or a petnames system.
Personally, I think a petnames system might be easier to get people on board with considering how controversial blockchain is for some reason. Also it has the added advantage that domains on it won't cost any money.

What's funny is that your local hosts file on Windows is located at: C:\Windows\System32\drivers *\etc\hosts*
That last bit probably looks familiar to GNU/Linux users...lol

Wasn't the acronym domain name server, and not "system"?

Do you have any recommendations for a privacy-respecting domain registrar, or a guide to keeping your registered domain private? Also: under what conditions do domain registrars give out the contact details of domains with the registrar information set to private? Thank you!
