A report from the Costs of War project at Brown University revealed that 20 years of post-9/11 wars have cost the U.S. an estimated $8 trillion, and killed more than 900, 000 people. “The war has been long and complex and horrific and unsuccessful... and the war continues in over 80 countries, ” said Catherine Lutz, co-director of Costs of War and a professor of international and public affairs at Brown.

While the U.S. chose to burn money on wars, China chose to spend on infrastructure, which underpins its phenomenal socioeconomic transformation.

China completed its first 117 km Beijing -Tianjin high speed rail in 2008. That was just 14 years ago. But as at April 8, 2022, with the Anqing-Jiujiang section of the planned Beijing-Hong Kong high speed rail started its operation, the total length of high-speed railway network in service already exceeded 40, 000 km, or equivalent to the length of the equator.

By comparison, the 800-km high-speed system between Los Angeles and San Francisco that was approved for construction in 2008, is still under construction. And it is not expected to be completed by at least in 2033!

The early 1990s saw the start of the country's massive plan to upgrade its network of roads and highways. The Shanghai–Jiading Expressway that opened to traffics in the late ‘80s was the first modern at-grade China national highways. And by 2011, just over 20 years, it had surpassed the overall length of the American Interstate Highway System. By the end of 2020, the total length of China's expressway network reached 161, 000 km, or more than twice the length of American Interstate, to become the world's longest expressway system by far. China and United States are two countries with about the same land mass.

Both China and the United States launched their respective 5G initiatives in 2019. As at 2021, China has installed more than 1.4 million 5G base stations, while the United States has built about 100, 000.

The construction of the BeiDou-2 satellite navigation system started in 2004. Today, it already has more satellites in orbit than U.S GPS (45 versus 31).

Compare this man to others. China is building business. Very stately. America needs a leader like this.

Hopefully Hainan is not the next Hambantota Port. Well no chance of that is there really? Hainan is in China. Always good to keep things in perspective. Hopefully not the next Singapore either - have talked to too many locals in Singapore whose parents had to go back to work in their '70's as they were struggling to survive!
